Joining the Swim Team
In BOKEN AQUATICS, the focus is on swimmers that have gone through a learn-to-swim program and want to move to the next level – Competitive Swimming!
Thus, we only take children that have gone through different beginners’ programs and work them through the following steps:
- Mini Squad- Here, children must be able to swim at least 15 meters and able to swim in a deep swimming pool. That is, they don’t need a coach to be with them in the pool at all times. The swimmers learn the basic skills of competitive swimming such as butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle and the main focus is to develop the swimming fundamentals. The swimmers must attend at least 2 classes per week for about 8 to 16 weeks before progressing to the next group – The Junior Squad.
- The Junior Squad – The swimmers continue to develop the stroke techniques including the technical aspects – starts (diving), turns, and finishes of all 4 strokes. They also add underwater skills to what they do. The swimmers must attend at least 3 practice sessions per week.
- The Intermediate Squad – The goal of this group is to swim at least 5 sessions a week. Swimmers in this group learn the process of goal setting. They also learn to independently monitor their training using the pace clock.
- The Senior/Development Squad – Here, swimmers are ready to race at the national and international levels. Their training sessions build up to 8 sessions a week. This group requires lots of commitment, dedication, and discipline for goals to be achieved.
